ASTRON has a Talent track programme in place since 2013.
In 2015 Emanuela Orrù was appointed as Junior Radio Observatory Astronomer.
As part of the ‘Charter Talent to the Top’ NWO has started this programme for NWO institutes. This talent track programme is targetting female talents from within the Netherlands and abroad who can develop towards becoming key figures in the institute within a period of 4 years. They are given the opportunity to present themselves both in research as well as in acquiring external funds. NWO offers the possibility to ASTRON, SRON and NSCR to offer a career path for two promising female scientists in their field of expertise in each institute.
NWO has made funds available for this programme.
Emanuela joined the Radio Observatory of ASTRON in 2011 as a Support Scientist for LOFAR. Since then, she has given an important contribution to Science Operations as well as to the coordination of several commissioning activities for the instrument. As of the start of her Talent Track programme in 2015, Emanuela is the PI of the calibration and Imaging tiger team, which aims at improving the imaging pipeline functionality and enhance its performance and usability by the general community. She is also continuing her involvement in Science operations and is assigned to high-level support/operational tasks. Eventually, she is also pursuing scientific research. Though various active projects, she aims at understanding and possibly unifying the rationale of the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes and their interaction with galaxies. Emanuela is chair of the Giant Radio Galaxies working group of the Magnetism Key Science Project of LOFAR and member of the Galaxy clusters working group of MSSS.
